O49 The use of augmented reality for surgical guidance: an assessment of the human error

Abstract Introduction Microsoft HoloLens® is an augmented-reality headset which increasingly used for surgical guidance. This allows the overlay of patient-specific virtual models obtained from medical images onto patient’s body surface using automatic marker-based alignment. can guide surgeons during certain tasks, e.g. determining biopsy needle entry points. study aims to measure human error in localisation with and discuss its implications. Method 59 adults were recruited between ages 20–59 years. A 12 cm2 digital marker was displayed on a monitor 9 different positions, one at time. repeated 3 times, resulting 27 markers shown each participant. Once detected by headset’s camera, hexagon rendered transparent lenses. Participants tasked click hexagon’s vertices mouse. The clicks’ coordinates recorded system compared predicted coordinates. allowed calculation vertex error. Result mean found be 5.19 mm (±3.56) range 0.08 29.77 mm.
